UNDRR - Understanding Disaster Risk

There’s no such thing as a natural disaster — hazards become disasters when

risks are ignored or poorly understood.

Understanding disaster risk means looking at all its dimensions:

  • Hazards – dangerous events or processes, either natural or human-made

  • Exposure – people, assets, systems that are in harm’s way

  • Vulnerability – conditions that make people and places more susceptible to

  • damage

Disaster risk is what happens when these three factors interact. Managing

risk means reducing vulnerability and exposure, while anticipating hazards.

Dive deeper into how these dimensions connect — and why this knowledge

is the foundation for disaster resilience HERE.

NSW Reconstruction Authority Disaster Adaptation Plan Guidelines.

The Disaster Action Plan (DAP) is designed to reduce disaster risk by

outlining practical strategies—such as changes to land use, upgrades to

critical infrastructure, and community preparedness initiatives—that

strengthen resilience and protect people from extreme weather events. With

climate change increasing the frequency and severity of these hazards, and

the Northern Rivers being one of Australia’s most disaster-prone regions, the

DAP provides a timely and essential framework for safeguarding

communities.

On Wednesday, 12 August, Reconstruction Authority CEO Mal Lanyon,

Minister for Recovery Janelle Saffin, and Head of Adaptation, Mitigation and

Reconstruction, Amanda Leck launched the Disaster Adaptation Plan (DAP)

Guidelines—NSW’s new multi-hazard, locally shaped and regionally

coordinated approach to disaster planning. Watch the Launch Webinar
